We caught up with Nancy Rosso at this year's Dogwood Festival in Fairfield. Nancy's booth stood out against other glass artists that we have seen so we decided to interview her. What makes Nancy's glass so special? Nancy's glass is unusual in the fact that most pieces are found pieces so if you see something you like you better grab it quick! Chances are it is a one of a kind piece. When we saw Nancy she had some very heavy platters and high quality unusual shaped crystal items. Nancy's painting is extremely vibrant and artistically different from other glass painters. How long have you been painting on glass?
"For fourteen years now. Before I started painting I was working full time but the result of a bad car accident left me unable to work and I started painting to support myself."Tell us about your work. "I do reverse painting on glass using acrylic enamel which is heat set on the glass. My glass is not ordinary and are mostly one of a kind pieces of glass that I pick up when I see something I like. I do a lot of custom work. I used to do murals, paint wood, bowls, furniture and floor cloths but now I do mostly all glass." Where can your work be seen? "The Gift Closet in Hartford, CT." How are craft shows different now than when you began? "The quality of crafts shows has gone downhill. I am sure most of us can agree on that." How does your work compare to other glass artists? "I don't do one stroke painting. The painting I do is reverse so it is highly detailed. I work in layers, painting on the outside of the piece so that when you look inside what you see is the reverse image. I don't like the way glass paint is transparent. I like dark vibrant colors, so I put on more than one coat to accomplish that look. It takes a lot more time but I love the look."
