Nancy Lou Riccio and Dave Sayad
Decorative Painters and Furniture Makers

Nancy Lou Riccio and Dave Sayad cover     1. Tell us about you and your work. Nancy Lou and Dave produce handmade rustic furniture and art, inspired by wildlife and the great camps of the Adirondacks. Most pieces are made of driftwood from the beaches and rivers of New England with the occasional addition of hardwood tree slices and milled lumber. The natural wood colors are retained, coated with tung and teak oil which brings out the beauty of the grain and renders the furniture water and insect resistant. Dave designs and constructs the furniture. Nancy Lou creates the art; realistic wildlife carvings of shorebirds, decoys and fish and paintings of flora and fauna in their natural habitats.
2. How did you get started doing what you do? Nancy Lou graduated as a fine arts major at the Tyler School of Art, Temple University. After a staff position on Natural History Magazine she established her own illustration studio in New York City working for major medical publications, pharmaceutical companies and book publishers. Dave was the owner and operator of a contracting business in upstate Connecticut and an avid lifelong outdoor sportsman. These factors familiarized him with the many woods and their properties as well as the creatures of the forests and streams. Having both shared a love of wood and wildlife it was a natural partnership for Nancy Lou and Dave; searching for the raw materials for their pieces to be consulting and working together to produce fine products.
3. What type of craft shows do you do and what do you like, dislike about shows? Nancy Lou and Dave participate primarily in juried craft shows which specialize in fine craft and fine art, preferring two or three day shows due to the time it takes to set up and break down their displays. Most important to them is working with pleasant promoters. They enjoy meeting other serious craftspeople and artists and visiting the various areas of the Northeast. What they dislike is arriving at a juried craft show and finding a number of booths with obviously imported buy/sell items. This not only lowers the quality of the show but also discourages serious craftspeople and buyers from returning to that show.
4. Where can you be reached or where can your work be purchased? Nancy Lou and Dave's work is available at craft shows in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New York and Pennsylvania. Custom pieces can be ordered. E-mail them at: www.eastriverroadstudio.com.
