Mark Bentz - Garden Grove Pottery

Mark Bentz      "I first throw the body of the tea pot and the lid on the wheel, then after a day or so the clay needs to harden to leather hard.I make the handle and the spout by hand. The tops of the lids are inspired by objects I see in museums and the images that I paint are inspired by nature.
I feel that my work is different from other ceramic artists because I combine the skills of painting and hand craft.
We have been doing shows for about ten years now, eight years full time. I do see the shows as about the same, but hear, as we go along, that some are trying to get more strict with jurying, catagories and craft. I hope that my work progresses to a higher level over the next five years. I really love getting out there after a long week in the studio, talking to the other artists, sharing information, and meeting the buyers. Jeff and I do about 100 shows a year, so our work is widely available. We have tried wholesale markets several times and have not had much luck.
After seeing a contemporary basket weavers exhibit at the Bostom Museum of Fine Arts, I was moved by his explanation of how he was inspired in his art. His shapes were very unusual, inspired by the wind and rain and how they might affect the reeds he used to weave those amazing shapes.
I returned to my studio with that in mind, and began making teapots. I hope that they keep evolving as I am as an artist. I believe continually re-inventing your line or craft is a good thing. I can't wait to see what they look like in two to five years. They are a labor of love.
