Ellen Hoverkamp

How did you get started in Scanner Photography?
In 1997, when our technology director, Paul Tortora showed me how to scan my students work for Internet display, the process seemed similar to using some of the equipment I had used from 1989 - 91 at Charrette in New Haven as part of a partnership with Creative Arts workshop called, Reprographics For The Visual Artist. During that time I worked on and exhibited a series entitled "Garden Delights", featuring fresh flowers arranged on a color laser copier. I began scanning my neighbors' flowers as a way to fit image making into my busy schedule. I posted my the first version of my web site, "Digital Imagery From My Neighbor's Garden" in 1998 and began selling my work on note cards as a way to circulate souvenirs of the day and nature's beauty. The "neighborhood" of gardeners willing to let me pick their flowers in exchange for personalized note cards has certainly grown over the years. I have upgraded my equipment as sales of my note cards and prints has allowed. I now have a body of scanner photography of over 600 images, and can print my work using archival media up to 22"x 32".
Is this your full time job? What else do you do?
I have been a full- time art teacher for the West Haven Public Schools since 1978. I moved from working in the elementary grades to the middle school level almost 2 years ago to be better able to integrate technology within a standard art curriculum. I teach Adobe Photoshop Elements and Apple's Imovie to my students. In 2000 - 2002, I taught an enrichment course in Photoshop to middle school students at Amistad Academy in New Haven.
Ellens work can be seen at: May 16 until June 25 - One Person Show, Artist Series, Tower Hill Botanic Garden, Boylston, MA Opening Reception, May 18, 6 - 8 PM
"This exhibit will be my largest showing of framed floral scanner photography to date. I am delighted to be among the few artists chosen to exhibit their garden related work for the 2006 season. Many thanks to the Artist Series jurying committee."
