Basket Artist While on sabbatical from teaching, I met a German woman, also named Gisela, who was making pine needle baskets. I was fascinated by this Native American craft, and she offered to teach me. I was hooked! During those winter months and in the years after that, we became friends. Meanwhile I had become addicted to this craft, and fifteen years later, I am still making pine needle baskets. I am still in awe of the fact that you can collect pine needles and other natural things and create awesome baskets. I am always finding new things to incorporate into my work and each piece I create is different. I have been asked to reproduce a certain basket, but I will not do that. What I create is made for that moment, so it can never be the same. And that is how I like it. In the winter months, when my husband and I live in Naples, Florida, I teach two-day workshops at Big Arts on Sanibel Island. I also do several indoor shows in that area. I have also repeatedly taught at the J.C.Campbell School in North Carolina. Currently, my work can be seen at the Topsy Turvy Gallery in Bethlehem, PA. It also will be on display and for sale at the Creative Arts Workshop in New Haven ,CT as well as at the Guilford Handcraft Center during November and December .Gisela can be reached at: Gisela M.Damandl, 1628 Lenox Avenue,Bethlehem, PA. 18018. |
