Storybook Joinery Bench-Made Reproduction Windsor Chairs & Period Furniture "by hand, by eye, the 18th Century way" A friend of mine was introduced to Charles Boland's work when she visited the Claude Moore Colonial Farm in McLean, Virginia. I had seen his work at shows in the past and now we are both big fans. Charles Boland has enjoyed woodworking for over 20 years. Originally inspired by Norm Abram and later Roy Underhill, Charles began the study of Windsor chair construction at the Windsor Institute in 2001 thus making a transition from power tools to only antique reproduction hand tools. A native of Texas, Charles relocated to West Virginia over a decade ago and soon fell in love with the Appalachian culture and the Colonial heritage of the region. Naturally, the Windsor chair would become the link between his woodworking skills, his love of history and new found desire to study, replicate and demonstrate this 18th Century American craft. He has collected many books on the study, history and crafting of the Windsor chair and visited numerous museums that house collections of Windsor furniture. Charles spoke with many chairmakers as well as collectors of period American furniture in an effort to understand the construction methods, paint wear patterns, history and artistic lines of these early American treasures.
