2007 November/December Show Reviews

Windsor Lions Arts and Crafts, Windsor Ct Green, May 12. 50 - 00 Exhibitors. 1 review received. The show was loaded with imports and commercial booths. Some exhibitors even left the "made in China" labels on the back of their products!
Bruce Museum Show, Bruce Museum, Greenwich, CT, May 19 - 20. 50 - 99 Exhibitors. 1 review received. Although Saturday was drizzly, some buyers came. It was my better day, but that's not saying much. Sunday was gorgeous but not too many seemed to be buying. I spoke to other artists who all said they did far. I was disappointed, especially since I waited six years to be accepted.
Long Meaddowe Days, Longmeadow Historical Society, The Green, Longmeadow, MA, May 19 - 20. 1 review received. This show has changed for the worse since I last did it 12 years ago. Juries don't know an import when they see it. The only person making money had "water guns" made out of plumbing parts.
Gervais Arts Festival Casco Bay Show, Portland Pier, Portland Maine, July 21 - 22. 1 review received. No advertising was done for this show. There was one sign at the end of the pier but nothing to bring in traffice from the street. When we got to the show the promoter was just arriving and we were told to pick any space we wanted (that should have told us!). There were approx. 12 - 15 vendors and no crowds. This is the most unprofessional promoter that I have ever met.
Colchester Art & Craft Show, Colchester Historical Society, Colchester Green, Ct. July 28. 50 - 99 Exhibitors. 2 reviews received. Comments: 1. Need to spread out - huge area. 2. Good show and layout. We were able to bring cars right onto green to unload, and were able to park very close for easy egress after show. Good advertising. I did not see any imports. Even though Bruce (Baratz, the promoter) was rushed to the hospital before the show, he had a very competent lady go around to check on everyone. Nice customers, would to again. Very profitable show.
Milford Oyster Fest, Milford Green, Milford, CT August 18. Over 200 exhibitors. 1 review received. Comments: Great show, great advertising (approximately 50 - 60 thousand people show up), easy set up. Little tough on take down, due to streets not opening up till 6:00 pm (however, people still buy up to 6). Very good communication, very prompt. Did not see any imports. Great mix of crafts and art. Will do over and over!
St. Peter's Apple Festival, Monroe Green, Monroe, CT, September 8 - 9. 50 - 99 Exhibitors. 1 review received. While this is an open show, it continues to be one of my best. Every crafter around me did ver well also. The staff is very helpful and loading/unloading is very easy. People come to shop and they are not hesitant in buying higher ticket items.
Trumbull Arts Festival, Town Hall Green, Trumbull, CT September 16. 50 - 99 Exhibitors. 8 reviews received. Overall rating: Good+, Layout of show was: Good, Were imports allowed? Yes: 1, No - 4, Were crafts limited by category: Yes 5, No 3. Would you apply again? Yes 5, No 2. Comments: 1. We have participated in the Trumbull Arts Festival for many years and had one of our best shows there in 2007. I have an extensive customer base here but we were happy to see many new customers as well. The crafts were especially well-juried this year - very high quality. The committee and hospitality were excellent as always. Music great except for the jazz which was too loud. It is a little gem of a show! 2. Hermit Crabs? Why would hermit crabs be allowed to be sold at a craft show? Sales were down this year, it was very cold and windy. Most of the jewelry was cheap beaded work. Sompe people had bad spots. Layout needs work for a better flow. New chairperson this year. 3. We always do well at this show. The ladies from the arts league are very helpful. I would suggest more higher end new crafters and less "hermit shell" types of booths. With all the beautiful arts and crafts they allow, they should promote this area more. Also, the entertainment is lovely, but much too loud. We had a hard time making sales and answering questions over the very loud music. 4. This show was a nice community festival. It was presented to me as a fine arts show, which was not the case. I was trying to sell a higher end fiber product with a "carnival" type vender in the next slot selling "pet crabs". Add to that the vender unpacking made in China product and hanging it as her own creation and you have the picture. 5. The quality of this show has gone down hill! Too many handbag and jewelry people. One of the craftspeople with dried/silk flowers had ceramic containers that were imports. 6. Very nice festival but sales were extremely slow.
Seymour Pumpkin Festival, French Memorial Park, Seymour, CT September 23. 100 - 150 exhibitors. 1 review received. Beautiful day, good crowd. This is a family day production (many food vendors/rides for the kids) and the townspeople support the town by showing up. The staff is a great group of people who work very hard to make sure the advertising is done. Most customers are looking for something useful at a fair price. I don't think sellers with high-end items would do very well as this is a "working class" group of folds and it takes many small sales to make it a great day.
