Exhibitor Show Reviews Appearing in theSep/Oct 2006 Issue

May Market, Hill-Stead Museum, Farmington, CT May 13 and 14, 2006. Over 200 exhibitors. One review received. Average sale: $16+, Comments: For one day of the two-day show it was a Monsoon!. The next day was unbearably soggy. The museum does not consider a rain date due to its busy schedule. Sales were very poor over all.
40th Annual Westport Craft Show, Westport-Weston Cooperative Nursery School, Staples High School, Westport, Ct May 27 & 28, 2006. Over 100 exhibitors. 2 reviews received. Comments: 1. The show is well established, but the attendance was extremely poor and very hot in the Field House. No air conditioning. Not one vendor I spoke to had a good show and many said they would not return. Too much jewelry. 2. My booth was at the end of the traffic flow pattern, and I am convinced that at least half of the people that did come in the door gave up because it was too hot. It was a real shame - especially with a $400 entry fee! I did have a lot of time to wander around and the committee had done a really nice job of selecting vendors. I sure wish they would move this show to the weekend prior - think it would be a better draw and likely to be a bit cooler as well.
Stratford Day, Stratford Day Committee, Main Street, Stratford, CT June 3, 2006. Over 200 exhibitors. One review received. Comments: It rained - actually it poured. Stratford Day has a rain date although it has rained four out of six years and they have never honored it. Thunderstorms were predicted for the day - the street has many trees on it. Many of the spots were flooded or right under the trees.
42nd Annual Jaycees Craft Show, Shelton Jaycees, Huntington Green, Huntington, CT June 4, 2006. Over 50 exhibitors. Two reviews received. Comments: 1. Rain threatening weather and roadside advertising done late may have been a factor in low attendance. Prizes for best arts and crafts is nice. 2. As with almost all my shows this spring, the weather was threatening - and it seemed that the crowd was rather light. But for a $50 entry fee, I did all right and it didn't actually rain. This is one of those few shows where spots are not preassigned, so there was some jockeying for position and competitors ended up across from each other. However, there were plenty of spaces around the perimeter of the green, so almost everyone ended up in a good spot. I think it was supposed to be juried, but there were a few booths that had buy/sell right out front.
Belfast Arts in the Park, Belfast Harbor, ME July 8 - 9. 50 - 99 exhibitors. One review received. Comments: Nice atmosphere, music all day. Children musicians also. Bathrooms were close by and very clean, not porta johns. Layout could have been a bit tighter. Good show with quality items. Very nice crowd.
37th Annual Art and Craft Fair, Schroonlake Association, Schroonlake, NY July 15. 100 - 150 exhibitors. One review received. Comments. 1. Really hot, the craft show faces the lake. A cool breeze blows off the lake all day. Quality wise is mixed. They are trying to turn this show around and make it better quality. Lots of jewelry. There are things from chainsaw carving to people who make frames with birchbark wood, pressed flowers and some really nice things.
